My daughter differs greatly from me in the aspect that she is not a morning person. Getting her up and going for school can be a challenge and often leads to frustration on both ends. We have had many talks about this and what she tells me is that, “she tries to be a good girl and not get upset in the morning but I just do things that make her mad like wake her up before the sun rises.” She is being a bit dramatic as I do not wake her up before sunrise but none the less this is how she views things. I try to explain to her that no one can make her mad. That her responding in a “mad” way is a decision that she is making. The concept that we have the choice in how we react is little too big for her to understand at this point. Nonetheless, I try to offer her alternate ways to react such as taking ten deep breath ect, but in the end, this is something we are still working on.
Even as adults the concept that we are the master of our emotions and can control our feelings in the big concept to grasp. We often let our emotions rule us. How many times have we left a simple mishap ruin an entire day? How many times have we reacted in fear rather than love when someone doesn’t act the way we perceive they should act? Often, we become victims of our emotions, letting them send us on a downward spiral of low vibrational feelings. We forget that we have power over our emotions or lack the skill on how to control them. Our yoga practice can empower us to shift our emotions. By working with manomayo kosha we can learn to transform our feelings.
“Inner peace begins the moment you choose not to let another person or event control your emotions.”
The Kosha’s are energetic sheaths that surround our higher self or atman. When I picture them, I see them as layers of an onion or a set of Russian dolls. All layers surround our higher self or atman. The different paths or limbs of Yoga help us clarify each layer allowing our divine nature to shine through. They start at the physical layer of our being with the annamaya kosha. The koshas get increasing subtler as you move inward. The third layer is called the manomayo kosha and relates to the mind. This kosha governs your feelings and emotions. It is thought to be the gateway to your higher self & links the physical aspects of the body to the soul. Our emotions can keep us trapped in the physical aspects of our world if let untamed. Once we learn to master our feelings and emotions we can use them to transcend the ego and move to higher levels of consciousness. We can learn to choose feelings and emotion that raise our vibration helping us connect to the divinity in ourselves.
Yoga empowers us by giving us tools to transform our feelings. Practices like pranayama and mantra can help shift our mindset. The tools have the power to lift our spirits and pull us out the downward spiral. Often in a funk I will put on some uplifting mantra or music and within minutes my mood has lightened. The different practices of pranayama can help shift our mood. Nadi Shodana helps to center us while Soma Vritti can help calm our nerves.
Our asana practice is also a tool we can use to train the mind to find serenity even in challenging situations. On the mat at some point in your practice you will experience frustration, judgment, or comparison. Whether it be becoming frustrated with yourself, comparing yourself to other students in the room, or judging the teaching style of your yoga instructor. I’m often plagued with thoughts like, “I’ll never be able to do this” or “She’s so much better than me” or “I could do if she didn’t count so slow” in my own yoga practice. These thoughts are bound to manifest even in the most seasoned yogis. When they do we simply need to return our focus back to our breath. Doing this over and over again will help build the muscle memory of the mind empowering us to come back to peace even faced with challenging situations in our everyday lives. When we learn to control the whirling’s of the mind we are able to find harmony in any circumstances.
This week I'll be sharing some of my favorite ways to quickly shift out of low vibrational emotions. Stay tuned for more or meet on the mat at one of my classes.
